Franschhoek Wine
Established in Franschhoek, South Africa in 2000, Klein Genot proudly rolled out its maiden harvest of red varietals in 2007 with just over 20 hectares of vineyards and the intention of creating young, modern wines. The new, purpose built Klein Genot cellar is scheduled to open its doors to an eager public in December 2008, also offering a restaurant and function facilities.
Klein Genot's soil consists mainly of beautifully fertile rocky and dark loam that has excellent water retention capability and consistent drainage. The rocky soil is especially good for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, as it keeps quite cool – something this grape varietal needs in order to flourish.
Klein Genot's very first vintage had the distinction of gaining special recommendation from the Wine of the Month Club and receiving a whopping four stars from John Platter the first time around - no mean feat to say the least. The estate is planted with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot vines.
The following delectable Franschhoek wines are available at the estate:
Our finest wine selection
BLACK SWAN RESERVE 2007
50/50 Blend of Cabernet and Cabernet Franc
Colour: Deep ruby centre, dark red edge.
Nose: Full and forward with fruit, dark- and red berries, cassis, sweet cherries and a slight dark chocolate. Big wood, but not too overpowering as it is balanced and structured with a slight vanilla and a subtle coffee nuance. The wine still has tightness which shows more development to come with ageing.
Palate: The wine’s entry is fruit-driven and has a powerful explosion of flavours that is underpinned by rich, ripe tannins, as well as balanced alcohol and acids. The wine has a long full middle palate showing loads of length. This, married with wood aging, leads to a complexity which allows the wine great depth, uniqueness and a long velvety follow through.
Alc 13.9%/vol R.S 3g/l
MERLOT 2007
Colour: Ruby red centre with a bright red edge.
Nose: Plumy, ripe strawberries with nuances of wood - a rich, full nose with depth. The wood is gentle and supportive.
Palate: Sweet ripe fruits, black berries and red berries on entry, supporting the overall palate of fruit. This gives the mouth feel depth and adds to the complexity of the wine. The toasty tannins are ripe, rich and full - adding to the width in the middle palate. The wine has a great follow through of sweet red fruits, which leads to a long finish in the mouth.
Alc 14.6%/vol R.S 2.9g/l
SHIRAZ 2007
Colour:A garnet to ruby red centre with a bright red edge.
Nose: Leather, violets and mineral with red and plum berry fruits, cherry and blackcurrant. This nose will become richer and fuller with time in the bottle. The wood, as with the previous vintage, is there but is now more supportive, giving the nose depth.
Palate: Fresh fruity entry, with a slight mineral palate in the middle which combines well with the wood tannins. The wine’s complexity comes from the integration of the wood with the tannins of the fruit. One also picks up a subtle coffee flavour. The wine shows a balance of acidity and alcohol and this allows the length to make the finish that much longer.
Alc 13.7%/vol R.S 2.8g/l
CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2007
Colour: Deep ruby centre, dark red edge.
Nose: Tight, intense with red and black berry fruit including cherry, black current and raspberry. Clean wooding that does not overpower the fruit, but shows on the nose alongside a slight pepper spice. The wine needs a little more time and will blossom with ageing.
Palate: Very big with red berry fruits that are rich and forward and shows more on the palate than the nose at the moment. The middle palate is full and shows width, with complexity and depth leading to a full dry finish. The tannins are ripe and present, with alcohol and acid linking well. The wood tannins integrate well with that of the fruit and this adds to the wine’s ability to round off neatly with length.
Alc 13.1%/vol R.S 2.8g/l
ROSÉ 2009 (Maiden vintage)
Colour: Pleasant raspberry blush
Nose: Crafted in the Northern France Anjou style, the wine’s nose holds red berries and more of the serious sweet cherry fruit from the Cabernet.
Palate: The palate holds a creamy mouth feel due to lengthy lees contact and fills the mouth with a hint of acidity, giving it balance and length. Big bodied, yet light enough to drink on its own and should improve exceptionally for the next 3 years.
Alc
13.5%/vol R.S 3g/l
SAUVIGNON BLANC 2009 (Maiden vintage)
Colour: Pale straw centre and slight green tint on the edge
Nose:The nose has a medium intensity and shows depth with upfront green and tropical fruits, such as pineapple, granadilla and green peppers.
Palate: The palate reveals a crisp dry acidity on entry and fruit follows through onto the palate from the nose. The wine has a long refreshing aftertaste and is very easy to drink immediately. It should go well with most summer dishes and may also be enjoyed by itself.
Alc
13.5%/vol R.S 3g/l
CHARDONNAY 2009 (Maiden vintage)
Colour: Pale straw colour with a slight green edge
Nose:Forward, but well balanced, the nose reveals lime and citrus as well as a slight toast due the length of time on lees.
Palate: The palate has a clean fresh mouth feel on entry, which showcases its inherent limes and citrus well. The length and depth on the wine makes it quite complex and rich. Goes well with most dishes and can also be enjoyed unaccompanied.
